New Student Orientation
New Student Orientation (NSO) is designed to help you feel confident and prepared before your first day of classes at Hinds Community College this fall. You’ll leave with important next steps completed, questions answered, and a better understanding of how to navigate college life at Hinds.
Our goal is simple: we want you to leave NSO feeling ready, connected, and excited to start your college experience at Hinds!
All NSO sessions are half-day programs. All campus sessions begin at 9:00 a.m., with the Utica Campus session beginning at 1:00 p.m.
- Raymond Campus: June 9, June 23, July 7
- Utica Campus: July 9 (1:00 p.m.)
- Rankin Campus: July 28
- Vicksburg & Jackson Campuses: July 29
- Parents are welcome to attend! Each student is limited to no more than two family members.
- All NSO sessions: space is limited, and pre-registration is required!
- The cost to attend NSO is $30, nonrefundable.

Starting college comes with a lot of new terminology. This guide explains some common terms used at Hinds.
Advisor
A staff member who helps you choose classes and stay on track toward graduation.
Add/Drop Period
A short window at the beginning of the semester when students can adjust their class schedules.
Canvas
The online learning platform where students access assignments, course materials, and grades.
Credit Hour
A unit used to measure coursework. Most classes are three credit hours.
Enrollment Center
Your one-stop location for help with admissions, advising, registration, and enrollment questions.
Enrollment Verification
A way to prove that a student is currently enrolled at Hinds Community College. Students may need an enrollment verification for things like insurance coverage, scholarships, loan deferments, or other official purposes.
FAFSA
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid used to determine eligibility for financial aid.
FERPA
A federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. This means colleges cannot share certain student information without permission.
Gus (Guiding Useful Services)
Hinds’ virtual assistant that provides quick answers to common questions through chat and text messaging.
My.Hinds
The student portal where students access important information and tools.
Navigator
The system used to manage student records and enrollment activities.
Program of Study
Your academic/career pathway or major at Hinds, such as Nursing, Business, Welding, or Education.
Student Email
All Hinds students receive a college email account used for official communication from the college.
Syllabus
A document that explains course expectations, assignments, and deadlines
