HSE Diploma Scholarships

Overview

Hinds Community College is proud to offer two scholarship options to eligible high school equivalency (HSE) diploma recipients who choose to enroll at Hinds CC as their first college after receiving their HSE diploma. Warren County students can be awarded our Education Pays scholarship, provided by The Craig H. Neilsen Foundation.

Award

Equivalent to the cost of one, three-credit hour college course

Deadline

First day of classes of first freshman semester (either fall, spring, or summer)

Criteria

  • Submit an Application for Admission to Hinds CC.
  • Submit the HSE First Class Free Award Application.
  • Submit your official HSE diploma transcript (either GED, HiSET, TASC, or Mississippi Competency-Based HSE).
  • Be 17 years of age or older.
  • Be a first-time entering freshman, meaning Hinds must be the first college you attend after receiving your HSE diploma.
  • Be admitted to Hinds CC as a Mississippi resident and as a U.S. citizen.
  • Enroll in an approved three-credit hour college course at Hinds CC.
  • Must not be receiving the HSE Scholarship.

The HSE Scholarship is for first-time college students who achieve outstanding scores on the GED, HiSET, or TASC (see score requirements below.)

Award

$1,000 per semester for up to four consecutive semesters, excluding summer terms.

First day of classes of first freshman semester (excluding summer terms)

Criteria

  • Submit an Application for Admission to Hinds CC.
  • Submit the HSE Scholarship Application.
  • Submit the official HSE diploma transcript verifying one of these test scores:
    • GED:  a composite score of 640 or higher if the student took the GED on or after January 1, 2014; or a composite score of 577 or higher if the student took the GED on or before December 31, 2013.
    • HiSET:  a composite score of 75 or above.
    • TASC: a composite score of 2800 or above.
  • Be 17 years of age or older.
  • Be a first-time entering freshman, meaning Hinds CC must be the first college you attend after receiving your High School Equivalency diploma.
  • Be admitted to Hinds CC as a Mississippi resident and as a U.S. citizen.
  • Have a standard high school diploma or High School Equivalency diploma.
  • Must not be receiving the HSE First Class Free Award or the ACT Scholarship.

Please note: to receive and retain this award, HSE Scholarship recipients must enroll in and be marked present in 15 or more credit hours each semester, complete each semester with 12 or more credit hours and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. Cumulative GPA includes all credit earned.

Education Pays is a partnership between Hinds Community College and The Craig H. Neilsen Foundation. Ray Neilsen, the Co-Trustee of The Craig H. Neilsen Foundation and the innovator of the “Education Pays” concept “wants to change lives.” Mr. Neilsen is very proud of this program and the opportunities that it can offer to people who did not finish high school or obtain a GED.

Award

A one-time award of $500

Criteria

  • Participate in a certified GED course at a site certified by Hinds Community College;
  • Successfully pass all components of the General Education Development (GED) test; and
  • Receive a certificate of high school equivalency from the Mississippi State Board of Community and Junior Colleges.
  • GED students must be a resident of Warren County, Mississippi for at least 90 days before participating in Education Pays.
  • Students must also be 18 or older to participate in the program.
  • There must be a 12 month period between enrollment in high school and enrollment in the college Adult Education program for the student to qualify.

In addition, students must agree to:

  • Complete registration process and pre-testing;
  • Participate in a minimum of 12 class hours;
  • Attend classes on a regular basis. No more than 3 absences per term are allowed. Make up work is permitted;
  • Remain an active member in the program until the GED is attained (returning each consecutive semester.);
  • Participate in the GED program in the classroom without significant classroom disruption;
  • Provide the original State of Mississippi GED score sheet and GED diploma documentation to the instructor for verification within two weeks of the document date.
  • Return to class to accept award.

Note: Students who wish to participate in the Education Pays program will need to sign an agreement when they register for the GED program.
