Student Spotlight
“Working with Mrs. Janella John-Sulton as my Retention Specialist was essential to my success during the semester. She was the only advisor I went to in my freshman year, and she helped me get back on track with my grades when I was close to dropping out. She opened up new opportunities by showing me different majors so I could stay enrolled, because she truly believed I was meant for something greater. Along with my kinesiology instructor, Rod Jones, Mrs. John-Sulton showed that they genuinely care about their students. Their one-on-one conversations with me changed my whole perspective on college and motivated me to do things the right way. I am truly thankful for their support”.
Kaden McGruder
“First, I want to thank Retention Specialist, Mrs. Janella John Sulton for affording me the opportunity to provide feedback on a significant initiative for Student Success at Hinds. The Success Story of Kaden is a testament to the investment of unlimited resources at Hinds. Regularly, I talk to Mrs. Janella about ways to strengthen the relationship with her department, and we discovered the struggles of Kaden. I will never forget the day in class that Kaden appeared “deflated and depleted” I decided to talk to him after class, not to discuss the specifics of his struggles, but to let him know that a look of desperation was revealed in his posture. It took him by surprise that I noticed, and he stated that “no one other than Mrs. John and you have ever mentioned that something was going on with me, and he said thanks for noticing and he decided to finish the semester.” This is truly noteworthy that a student had exhausted all resources, and he was at the point of withdrawing from Hinds, but Mrs. Janella John Sulton was there to salvage every ounce of hope to keep him enrolled at Hinds”.
