Choosing where to pursue a secondary education can feel overwhelming for some students.

Hinds Community College made that decision less exhausting for prospective students by hosting the Rankin College Day on Nov. 4 at the Muse Center. Students from area high schools visited exhibits for all academic and career-tech programs offered by Hinds and participated in hands-on activities to deepen their knowledge of possible career paths provided by those programs.

McLaurin High School junior Lacey Morgan of Brandon said the event enabled her to catch a glimpse of the culture at Hinds. “After high school, I plan to enroll in the Hospitality and Tourism Management Technology program,” Morgan said. “I really like this event because it gives me a chance to understand the requirements for becoming a chef.”

Morgan was among hundreds of prospective students who visited with faculty and staff to learn about the admissions process, available scholarships, financial aid, majors and student life.

Jabari Whitehead and his father, Lee, both of Richland, visited the Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning, and Refrigeration Technology (HVAC) program exhibit to prepare for the spring 2023 semester.

“I came here today to meet my instructors and tour the campus,” he said. “Hinds has the best HVAC program in Mississippi, and I am excited to start my coursework in January.”

In addition to the educational aspects of the event, students also enjoyed free food and door prizes.
