Hinds Community College has named Dr. Tyrone Jackson as District Dean of Students and Dean of Students for the Raymond Campus as of Aug. 1. He replaces Dr. Barbara Blankenship, who retired in June.

Originally from Rosedale, located in the Mississippi Delta, Jackson has spent the last two years in Perkinston, serving as dean of students at the Jefferson Davis Campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

Dr. Jackson has experience in all areas of the student services field, including admissions, financial aid, student activities, academic counseling and housing, among others. He has served as assistant and interim dean of graduate and continued studies, associate director of housing and residence life, and as an academic counselor, all at Delta State University. He has also served as an adjunct instructor of both undergraduate and graduate courses at five Mississippi community colleges and universities.

He is a graduate of Delta State University, where he received his bachelor’s degree, Master’s of Education degree, and Doctor of Education degree.

In his new role at Hinds Community College, Jackson will report directly to Dr. Theresa Hamilton, vice president of the Raymond Campus.

“From my research and from what I have heard for many years about Hinds, it is an institution destined for continued success,” said Jackson. “Hinds is a progressive institution of higher learning, and I can’t wait to be a part of the community. It’s already a great community college and I am eager to use my skills and talents to make the institution even greater.”

Jackson specifically hopes to enhance the areas of the college related to enrollment, retention, student life and advancement.

“I am a firm believer that learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom,” he said. “Student services is charged with supplementing classroom activities in educating the whole student. It is my ultimate goal to serve prospective and current students from inquiry to graduation by being a conduit for students to persist and obtain professional as well as personal goals.”
