RAYMOND – Learn how to troubleshoot and maintain a home HVAC system, basic electrical skills or how to weld this summer at Hinds Community College.
For homeowners, learning do-it-yourself repair and maintenance skills can save time and money, said Jason Webb, Hinds Career Technical Education Dean of Construction and Manufacturing.
“Students learn enough to potentially troubleshoot the source of a problem, an asset when seeking estimates for repairs,” Webb said. “It also gives them a little more confidence when they are trying to do something around the house. That was one of the intentions of the program.”
The 6 p.m. weekly classes begin May 27 on the Rankin and Raymond campuses and meet for seven weeks. Each course costs $150.

In the hobby welding course, students spend five or six weeks learning basic safety and different types of welding and cutting. When they have mastered the basics, they can work on a personal project, like building a grill or fire pit.
Some summer students have enjoyed the classes so much they’ve continued their learning. One student who took hobby welding will soon receive a welding certification, Webb said.
“He just wanted to keep going,” Webb said.
