RAYMOND – As David Creel retires from his second career, he takes with him the highest award Hinds Community College offers – the 3E Award-Emphasis on Excellence and Enrichment.

Creel, who is retiring June 30 as Associate Vice President of Workforce Development, came to Hinds about 10 years ago after retiring from private industry, bringing with him inside workplace expertise and ongoing professional relationships with both industry partners and Hinds employees.

A Byram resident, Creel said he originally came to Hinds to work specifically on the Continental Tire project when it was still on the drawing board and did not expect to stay 10 years. But his role evolved, especially after the death of his leader and mentor, Vice President Dr. Chad Stocks, in 2021.

The relationships he has established over the years “are one of the biggest blessings. I think that relationships are our real key,” he said. “This role gave me the opportunity to work alongside funders, community leaders, elected officials and the college, all with a common goal of trying to help people move forward in their careers.

“I feel like this is where the Lord wanted me to be. I felt confident that, at more than any other time in my career, I was at the right place, at the right time, doing the right things,” he said.

“I wasn’t looking for a second career when I got here, but that’s what I found. It’s gone by quickly, and it’s been a lot of fun.”

Creel’s “impact has been significant, and his professionalism, dedication and commitment are unrivaled,” said Hinds President Dr. Stephen Vacik. “Regardless of the task at hand, the timeline given or the depth of complexity (Creel) exhibits a cooperative and gentle spirit. He responds quickly, takes a thoughtful approach and rightfully considers what is best for all concerned.”

Dr. Ginger Robbins, Vice President of Workforce Development and Governmental Affairs, singled out his strong work ethic.

“I have so much respect and awe for his ability to successfully handle so many different projects at once. His commitment to the success of Hinds and the people, industries and communities we serve is inspiring,” she said.
