Located in Vicksburg, Mississippi, our center offers hands-on, industry-driven training that prepares individuals for essential roles aboard towboats, barges, and vessels navigating America’s waterways. Whether you’re starting fresh or upgrading your skills, our programs are designed to get you job-ready fast.
Deckhand Training
1-Week Entry-Level Training Course
Our Deckhand Training program is a fast-paced, hands-on course designed to prepare individuals for immediate employment in the inland marine industry. In just one week, students learn the core duties and safety responsibilities of an entry-level deckhand working on a towboat or barge.
What You’ll Learn:
- Hazard Communications
- Countermeasures on water
- Basic First Aid for Maritime Industry
- Slips, Trips and Falls Prevention
- Emergency procedures and man-overboard drills
- Onboard responsibilities and expectations
Graduates will have the knowledge and practical skills needed to step onto a vessel with confidence and begin their maritime career.
Tankerman Training
1-Week Specialized Certification Course
The training consists of 32-hour Tank Barge Dangerous Liquids training and a 16-hour Tank Barge Fire Fighting Training.
32-hour Tank Barge Dangerous Liquids Training Topics:
- Cargo Containment
- Cargo-Handling Systems
- Instrumentation Systems
- Operations Connected with Loading and Discharging
- Operating Procedures and Sequence
- Emergency Procedures
16-hour Tank Barge Fire Fighting Training Topics:
- Elements of Fire (Fire Triangle)
- Ignition Source (General)
- Main Cause of Fire and Spreading of Fires
- Extinguish Small fires Using Portable Extinguishers
This course is ideal for experienced deckhands looking to advance their careers by qualifying for more specialized and higher-paying positions
Training Requirements
- Must be 18+ years of age
- High School Diploma or Equivalency
- Physical, MRI, and Background Check required
- Tankerman Training reuires a TWIC card
How to Enroll
This training is offered in partnership with local maritime companies in the Vicksburg area. Follow the steps below to get started:

If you are not currently employed by one of our maritime industry partners, email your resume to workforce@hindscc.edu. We will forward it to our local partners for consideration. - Meet Employer Requirements
Once you are hired, your employer will provide details about upcoming training dates and any additional requirements needed before you begin.
