Hinds Community College Rankin Campus Associate Degree Nursing student Enrique Sosa is the recipient of the Kelley Humphreys nursing Scholarship for 2023-2024.

Sosa, 21, of Brandon was born in Cuba, but came to the United States as a young child with his family. Now he’s a first-generation college student pursuing his dream.

“My parents left everything to give me a better future here in the States. I want to make it count,” he said. “I always wanted to help people, so I thought, ‘why not nursing?’ There’s always a great need for nurses.

“Nursing has always been my first thought of a career since high school,” he said. “Nursing is very versatile. You can do different things.”

The Humphreys scholarship is named in honor of a Hinds nursing graduate, Kelley Elizabeth Humphreys, who was working in the oncology unit at St. Dominic Hospital when she was killed in a Jackson car crash in 2006.
