RAYMOND, Miss. – For Daniela Patricia López Rodríguez, tennis has never been just a sport. It has been a lifelong pursuit, a dream formed before sunrise practices and fueled by belief, sacrifice and an unwavering love for the game.
A native of Venezuela, Rodríguez picked up a tennis racket at just four years old. From that moment, she knew she was working toward something bigger. While most children her age were still discovering hobbies, Rodríguez was already committed to the grind, waking up as early as five in the morning to train, day after day, with one goal in mind – to one day play collegiate tennis.
Her dedication paid off quickly. In her very first tournament, Rodríguez finished as the doubles runner-up, a performance that opened the eyes of her parents and confirmed her potential. By the age of 12, she had risen to become the number one player in both her city and her country, earning sponsorships from Babolat and representing her state for several years as its top-ranked player.
As her career continued to grow, Rodríguez took the next step at 15 years old, moving to Spain to compete at an even higher level. The transition challenged her both on and off the court, but it also sharpened her competitive edge and prepared her for what was to come.
That journey ultimately led her to Hinds Community College, where the dream she had chased since childhood became reality.
“I am very grateful to Hinds Community College for giving me the opportunity to show that if you have a dream, you must pursue it until you achieve what you want,” Rodríguez said.

Now a freshman standout, Rodríguez has made an immediate and lasting impact for the Eagles. Her debut season culminated in national recognition, as she was named the 2025 ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Rookie of the Year at the NJCAA Division I Women’s Tennis National Championship. The prestigious honor, presented by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, recognizes the top first-year player in the nation based on performance, sportsmanship and overall impact.
“Daniela maintains a high standard of excellence in athletics and academics alike,” said her coach Jacki Millet. “Her commitment to teamwork and her proactive leadership style have been instrumental to the success of the women’s tennis team.”
Throughout the season, Rodríguez turned heads with her aggressive baseline play, commanding court presence, and poise in high-pressure situations. She played a key role in Hinds’ strong showing at the national tournament, competing consistently against elite opponents and elevating her team at every opportunity.
For Rodríguez, the award represents more than personal success. It is the realization of a dream shaped by early mornings, long hours of training, and years of belief.
“During these two years, I have felt very happy at Hinds Community College,” Rodríguez said. “My team, coaches and professors have given me their full support, trust and motivation, and they have been fundamental throughout this journey in both my academic and tennis career. They have helped me grow not only as an athlete, but also as a person. Here, I have truly felt like part of a family and have shared so many beautiful moments. Thank you, Hinds Community College, for all your love and support.”
