William "Bucky" McElroy

Eagles football hall of famer William “Bucky” McElroy (1950) looks forward to a completely different sport every April at Hinds Community College – golf.

McElroy, who many of his generation say is the greatest football player to ever wear an Eagles uniform, is still active with the Hinds Community College Alumni Association. He also fields two teams of four people each in the college’s annual Golf Fun Fest, traveling from his home in Monroe, La. The Golf Fun Fest is April 19 at Eagle Ridge Golf Course in Raymond.

Like a lot of people associated with Hinds Community College – alumni and other supporters – McElroy’s generous giving is not limited to just the Golf Fun Fest. He has contributed to athletic scholarships over the past few decades, hoping to give other young athletes a start at Hinds like he had.

“I would do anything for Hinds Community College,” McElroy said. “I owe it to them. I answer the call every time because if I’m able to give a kid a boost through scholarship funds or anything, I’m going to do it.”
