Joey Sherman

Probably few people can boast that they received degrees from two different colleges in the same month, but Hinds alumnus Joey Sherman can.

Sherman, a Terry High graduate, attended Hinds Community College from 2005 to 2007 but did not graduate before transferring to Mississippi State University to finish his degree in civil engineering.

A member of the Hinds golf team, Sherman said his experience at Hinds was so good he wanted not just an MSU degree but one from Hinds as well.

“I really enjoyed my time at Hinds,” Sherman said. “I met lots of new people there and established friendships that I continue to have today. The fact that it was so close to home made it even better because it allowed me to make a smooth transition from high school to college.”

The quality of instruction, caring teachers and small class size – coupled with the opportunity to save money by commuting from his home and drawing on scholarship dollars – all made Hinds a great choice for him.

Now that alumni can “transfer hours back” to Hinds from universities they’ve also attended, students like Sherman can still earn their Hinds degree. In December 2011, Sherman did just that, transferring 32 hours back to Hinds Community College for his associate’s degree at the same time he earned a bachelor’s degree from MSU.

Now he works as an engineer for Entergy’s Grand Gulf Nuclear Power Station in Port Gibson.
