VICKSBURG – James Turner is in the 11th grade and already cooking with grease when it comes to his career plans.

“I’m studying culinary arts here,” said Turner, among several Warren Central High School juniors and seniors in attendance for the College Carnival recruiting event March 2 at Hinds Community College Vicksburg-Warren Campus.

Turner is dually enrolled in college credit courses at Hinds, giving him a leg up on earning his college credentials on the way to building a career. “It’s been a good opportunity for me to learn how to create certain things in the kitchen,” he said.

About 800 students from Vicksburg, Warren Central, Porters Chapel and St. Aloysius high schools found out about admissions, majors, financial aid, registration and more from faculty and staff during the come-and-go event.

“We want to be part of your decisions here at Hinds Community College,” said Cindy Mott, a Business Administration instructor at the Highway 27 campus and among several coordinators of the event for the campus.

Activities outside the Loviza Building put a spirit of play in the event program and gave students another reason to enjoy their Hinds experience.

“You get a lot of help here and many opportunities to succeed here,” said Anaya Peoples, a dually-enrolled Vicksburg High School student.

A larger event at the campus, Spring Signup Day, is planned for April 10 and will offer an opportunity to both high school students and adults to register early for summer or fall classes.
