Medical Assistants are multi-skilled health professionals specifically educated to work in ambulatory settings performing administrative and clinical duties. The practice of medical assisting directly influences the public’s health and well-being, and requires mastery of a complex body of knowledge and specialized skills requiring both formal education and practical experience that serve as standards for entry into the profession.

Administrative and Clinical duties vary from office to office, depending on size, location, and specialty and may include the following: answering telephones and scheduling appointments, utilizing various computer applications for billing, coding, and filing insurance claims. Clinical duties include assisting the physician with patient examinations and treatments, assisting with minor surgical procedures, collecting and processing laboratory specimens, preparing and administering medications as directed by the physician, authorizing prescription refills as directed, performing ECGs, removing sutures and changing dressings.

Practicum and Graduation Information
Students will complete an unpaid, supervised practicum in an ambulatory healthcare setting, performing psychomotor and affective competencies prior to graduation. Graduates of this program will be awarded an Associate in Applied Science Degree and are eligible to take the National Certification Exam given by the American Association of Medical Assistants to become a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA(AAMA)).

The Medical Assisting Technology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).
