Music Industry Information

Knight Bruce's experience in the music and recording industry spans over four decades of writing, performing, recording, and producing music that has touched millions of lives.

From earliest childhood, a passion for music led to years of classical piano study, music theory and contemporary music training. At the age of four, Bruce began formal study with B.H.Kenna, a student of Rosina Lhevinne. Other Lhevinne students include Van Cliburn, James Levine and John Williams. By the age of thirteen, he was composing and arranging for local groups as well as his high school music ensembles. At the age of seventeen. while still in high school, Bruce was signed to United Artist and began touring. After study at the University of MS, he began pursuing opportunities to tour extensively throughout North America and Europe. He and his group, RAS, were endorsed artist with Moog synthesizers, Slingerland Drums, and Guild Guitars. Also during these years, he built and was co-owner of North American Recording, the first 24 track recording studio in Mississippi. This studio was instrumental in starting the Music Recording and Techniques courses at Jackson State University.

After a decade on the road, Knight cut back on his touring schedule to work as a composer for film and television. His compositions range from solo instrument to full orchestra, in most all musical genres, and includes work for clients such as NASA, Peavey Instruments, and PBS. Knight expanded his work into audio post engineering for television and has engineering credits ranging from Between the Lions to The W.C. Handy Blues Awards, as well as many other award winning television series.

As a musician, composer, arranger, producer, musical director, and/or audio engineer Bruce has worked with a diverse list of artist and companies, including Thelma Houston, Mickey Gilly, Perry Como, Chester Thompson (Tower of Power), Doc Severinsen, The Lionel Hampton Big Band, Keith Carlock (Steely Dan), Danny Serafine (Chicago), Polygram Records, Malaco Records, BB King, Bobby Rush, The St. Petersburg Russia Philharmonic Orchestra, Mac McAnally, Laudir de Oliveira (Joe Cocker, Sergio Mendes), Sirius Thinking Ltd., The Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, Roger Mudd, Eudora Welty, Jose Feliciano, Cinema 360, James Stroud (Dreamworks), and many others.

Bruce was one of the first recipients of the Legend award at the local JMA Awards in 1994. He has been nominated for an Emmy Award for his work as an audio engineer, and won an Emmy award in 2006 as Composer for a television series. He is a certified user of Avid Audio Pro Tools.

Bruce came to Hinds Community College in 2009 as a consultant for the newly developing Music Industry program. Instrumental in developing the curriculum, he became director of the music industry/recording arts and technologies program in 2010, and loves sharing his experience and enthusiasm for audio and music with his students. In addition to teaching, Knight continues to work in the industry as both an engineer and musician.
