About Dr. Vacik

Stephen (Steve) Vacik is the seventh President of Hinds Community College. Dr. Vacik came to Hinds Community College in 2020, and has nearly 25 years of experience working in various roles with community colleges in four states.

Previously, he served as president of Maysville Community and Technical College, a member institution of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. During his tenure, MCTC built and relocated onto a new campus in Rowan County, secured numerous public and private grants and gifts, established new programs in high-wage, high-demand careers, and increased significantly the number of high school students enrolled in dual credit classes. MCTC enjoyed its highest annual production of student credentials twice and reduced the achievement gap between URM students and the overall student body to less than two percent during his tenure.

Dr. Vacik also served as president of Colby Community College in Colby, KS, from 2011—2015. While at CCC, he served as Secretary and Vice President of the Council of Presidents (KACCT), Vice-Chair of EduKan Online (distance learning consortium of western Kansas colleges) and as a founding member of the Kansas Articulation and Transfer Council through the KS Board of Regents.

Prior to serving as president at CCC, Vacik was chief instructional officer at East Mississippi Community College, and he spent eight years at Bevill State Community College in Alabama, where he served in a variety of roles, including faculty member, Student Support Services (TRIO) Director, college-wide career- technical administrator and as Fayette Campus CEO, and at the University of Alabama as a full- time staff member in the Gorgas Undergraduate Library. He has served on numerous local, state and national boards and committees.

Though born in North Dakota, Steve, as well as his wife Candace, grew up in Mobile, AL. They have two amazing sons and one equally amazing daughter-in-law, Walter (Sarah), a minister in Overland Park, KS, and Michael, a junior at Kentucky Wesleyan College. In his spare time, Dr. Vacik enjoys reading, traveling, spending time with his family and watching college football.

Dr. Vacik is a graduate of The University of Alabama, where he earned his B.A. in English, M.A. in History and Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration.
