Advising Services
Counselors serve as the general advisors for all students entering into the college. At the time the student is enrolled, the counselor will provide the student with the appropriate information to match college resources with the student's needs. Counselors can assist in making the student's entry into Hinds a smooth one. They may assist the student in exploring a variety of courses leading to various majors. Counselors can assists students in adapting to change and in learning good decision making skills. The counselor, when appropriate, will may make appropriate referrals to other resources which may be of use to the student.
Counselors will advise and assist students in selecting courses which are appropriate for their program of study. Students will visit with an advisor before each registration period to select courses for the next semester. Students may change their major during any of the advising sessions. Students should also inform the advisor if they have changed colleges they plan to attend or have new career goals.
Students who are undecided about their college majors may request to take interest inventories which will help to pinpoint their career interest patterns. These are available at all HCC campuses. These, along with the CHOICES computer program are available at all locations. This program includes an assessment of interests, aptitudes, and values; a listing of senior colleges and universities in the nation with Internet access to most; and a listing of jobs posted with the state employment offices in all 50 states. Access to this program is free.
Academic Advisors
Counselors utilize articulation charts and college/university catalogs to select those courses which are listed as requirements for the student's major. On average, a student may transfer half (60 to 64 hours) of his required university courses from the community college.
Courses taken at the community college usually transfer to the senior college/university unless the courses taken were developmental or the student earned an unsatisfactory grade, changed his major, or changed his listed school for transfer. Students should discuss with their counselors their proposed academic plans during their initial advising session. See the Hinds Catalog for more information.

Career And Technical Advisors
Technical and Career program students should see a career/technical counselor to schedule courses for each semester. To complete these two types of majors, a student must follow a carefully outlined program of courses. One-year, two-year, and certificate programs that lead to employment opportunities are available.
