Randy K. Mapes joined the staff at Hinds Community College in 1995, where he is the Woodwind Instructor and the Assistant Band Director. He holds a Master of Music degree in Woodwind Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Bachelor of Music degree in Saxophone Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. He previously served as Director of Bands/Woodwind Instructor for three years and Assistant Band Director/Woodwind Instructor for five years at Itawamba Community College in Fulton, MS. Mr. Mapes currently performs with the Tupelo Symphony Orchestra, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, and the Jackson First Baptist Church Sanctuary Orchestra.
He has performed in backup groups for such artists as Rod Stewart, Lou Rawls, Wayne Newton, Buddy DeFranco, and Nell Carter, as well as in the Dee Barton Big Band and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. He has had articles published in the Saxophone Journal, the Mississippi Bandmaster and the Mississippi Flute Association Newsletter. In 1991 he was awarded a "Citation of Excellence" from the National Band Association. He is also listed on the Mississippi Arts Commission Touring Artist Roster. Mr. Mapes is presently a member and past president of the Mississippi Public Community/Junior College Band Directors Association. He has recorded a solo CD as well as CD's with the Mississippi Wind Band and the Mississippi Wind Symphony. In addition, he is a frequent clinician, recitalist and adjudicator.
