PEARL - Adults seeking opportunity for more education or training can find out what they need to do at Hinds Community College’s Start Fresh Expo.

The college and career expo for adults, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 21 on the Rankin Campus, offers one-stop information on everything from obtaining a GED high school equivalency certificate to enrollment at Hinds Community College to other available services that many people need to help with training or education.

Those services include finding out about benefits and training for displaced workers, starting a small business and learning about all types of financial assistance.

Hinds Community College adult recruiter Shane Brown is among those who will be on hand to talk to prospective students about the opportunity Hinds has to offer them.

“Our Fresh Start Expo will be a one-stop shop for anyone interested in bettering their lives and having that fresh start that they need to succeed in these tough economic times,” he said.

Other participants in the expo are the WIN Job Center, Trustmark Bank, United Way of the Capital Area, Small Business Development Center and Rankin County Chamber of Commerce.

Hinds has stepped up GED testing and classes throughout its district and is now offering FastTrack GED classes for anyone who only needs to pass one or two sections to receive a GED. Through a grant from Dollar General, Hinds pays the testing fee of $40.

The college also offers the first class free to all GED recipients and will pay a half-tuition scholarship for those who achieve a certain score.

The average age of a Hinds student is 25 years old. The college offers a number of programs, such as the electrical and welding courses at the Career & Technical Building on the Rankin Campus, that are offered at night that help working adults. Additionally, Hinds has academic courses at night and online courses.

The Rankin Campus is at 3805 Highway 80 East in Pearl. The expo is in the Multi-Purpose Room of George Wynne Hall, located in the center of campus.
