Hinds Community College broke ground recently on D.G. "Sonny" Fountain Hall, a new building named for the late president of the Hinds Community College Board of Trustees.
Fountain, a trustee for 30 years, died March 28. His family lives in Utica.
"The years he served as board chairman exemplified his commitment to the college," said Hinds President Clyde Muse. "He very definitely had a heart for this institution, the employees and the students."
Fountain always preferred staying behind the scenes in his leadership of the college, said Jackie Granberry, vice president for Institutional Advancement.
"This building will give him the recognition he so greatly deserves as it will welcome all guests, employees, students and the community to Hinds Community College," Granberry said.
Fountain Hall will be a signature building for the Raymond Campus. The two-story, 28,604-sq.-ft. building, whose classic style will match that of Cain-Cochran Hall, is expected to be completed in spring 2010.
Fountain Hall will welcome visitors to campus and will be the new home for Institutional Advancement, the Development Foundation and the alumni office. Recruitment and retention offices, as well as the student group Hinds Connection, will also be located on the ground floor. A large multi-function room will be available for group meetings.
The new building will be at the entrance of the Raymond Campus on the southwest corner of Main Street and Hinds Boulevard next to Porter Hall. The second floor of the building will contain administrative offices, including Business Services, Community Relations, the president's office and a new board room.
"The D.G. ‘Sonny' Fountain Hall will serve ... as a beacon for all who come to this campus," said Robert Pickett, current president of the Hinds trustees. "Under one roof, we will house the majority of the district administrative offices. The welcome center will be a resource for employees, alumni and the community."
Architects for the project are Eley Associates/Architects, P.A. The contractor is Paul Jackson & Son Inc. of Brookhaven. The building will cost about $7 million.
"We're grateful for the stewardship that Hinds Community College has exemplified in the construction and maintenance of the facilities entrusted to it," said David Anderson, executive deputy director for the Mississippi Department of Finance and Administration.
