Hinds inducts student leaders, awards given

Hinds Community College Associated Student Government inducted new student leaders on May 5 for the 2009-10 academic year. They are Stephen Decareaux of Brandon, president; Carlesha Wells of Jackson, vice president; and Jessica LaFleur of Clinton, formerly of Flowood, secretary.

Hinds Community College Associated Student Government senators Coby Gaines of Clinton and Ernest Dixon of Vicksburg were honored May 5 with the Joe Cooper Service Award.

Gaines, who served as parliamentarian this year, also won the award last year when he was ASG president. Dixon spearheaded homecoming elections and the March Hinds Idol competition.

This is the first time the award, selected by ASG senators, has gone to two people in a year.

Hinds Community College Associated Student Government President Cherish Forsman of Noxapater received the Percy Brooks III Leadership Award on May 5.

Raymond Campus ASG members selected Forsman for the award.

Joe Cooper of Jackson was Associated Student Government president on the Raymond Campus in the 1983-84 school year. He was killed in a car accident shortly after leaving Hinds. He was known on campus for public service.

Percy Brooks III of Clinton was a student at Hinds in 1991 and 1992. He was killed in a car accident on the way back from a campus visit at Mississippi State University before he graduated from Hinds. He was a senator, residence assistant and orientation leader.
