04/14/08 – Prospective students can get the flavor of the Hinds Community College experience during a special Preview Night 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24, on the Raymond Campus football practice field.

Parents and students can visit more than 60 booths showcasing academic programs, student organizations, athletics and more from each of the college’s six locations. They can also take a tour of the Raymond Campus.

A mini-workshop on financial aid will help them figure out how to pay for their classes. Prospective students, including next year’s high school seniors who want to dual enroll, can also register for classes while they are on campus.

A parent orientation session will be offered every 20 minutes.

Featured entertainment includes the Hinds jazz band, Hinds choirs and a live radio remote broadcast.

Last year, more than 500 students and parents, including 379 students representing more than 60 high schools, attended Preview Night. About 100 students registered for fall classes.

Among those who attended last year was Chelsea Leblanc of Jackson, who graduated from Murrah High last May. She signed up to work on the Eagle yearbook staff and is now editor. She is also a member of the Hinds Connection student recruiting team.

“Preview Night gave me a thrill of excitement and let me know what to expect from Hinds. I was so glad I went because I felt a sense of comfort when I left.  I literally could not wait to start Hinds after I left,” she said.

Jay Allen, dean of enrollment services, expects this year to be even bigger with more entertainment and more informative sessions.

“This is a great way for parents and prospective students to really get a sense of what Hinds Community College is about – all the opportunities that we have for students and all the ways we can help them have a quality college experience,” Allen said. “Programs at all six locations will be represented with informative booths plus visitors can get some practical business done while they are here.”

A wide range of door prizes - including an iPod Shuffle, DVD players and Hinds college items - will be given away. Those attending will get free food and a free Preview Night T-shirt.
