Mississippi and the Arts Week set March 31-April 4 at Hinds Community College

03/06/08 - Hinds Community College's Mississippi and the Arts Week takes a look at the works of Mississippi-born authors Eudora Welty (1909-2001) and Richard Wright (1908-1960) on its opening day, Monday, March 31.

The rest of the week through April 4 will feature a variety of lectures, demonstrations and performances on the Raymond Campus. Mississippi and the Arts Week events are free to the public.
Welty
Mississippi Author Eudora Welty was the honoree at this 1987 luncheon after she lectured on her work at the Southeastern Conference on English in the Two-Year College (SCETC) hosted by the Raymond Campus English faculty. Standing directly behind Welty is Peggy Brent, English department chairwoman and Mississippi and the Arts Week founder. Faculty members at that time included Beverly Farris (now Beverly Fatherree); Sara Jenkins, retired; Faye Angelo, retired; Betty Furstenberger, deceased and Dr. Nell Ann Pickett, retired. Seated with Welty is Mark Reynolds, then chairman of SCETC’s regional executive committee.

Welty will be recognized with two events. Millsaps Professor Suzanne Marrs, chosen by Welty as her biographer, had spent many hours in conversation with her. Marrs' unique access and valuable insights are shared in her lecture, "Eudora Welty and Word Play," at 10 a.m. in Hogg Auditorium.

At 11 a.m., following the Marrs lecture, one of Welty's most well-known short stories, "Why I Live at the P.O.," will be brought to life on the Hogg Auditorium stage by actress Jo Ann Robinson.

The centennial of Wright's life will be marked at Hinds with a week-long exhibit in McLendon Library.

At 1:15 p.m. on March 31, Bessie Brown, Raymond Campus English instructor, will present in McLendon Library "Richard Wright: The Writer of Light." She will offer insights into his writings as well as his legacy of portraying blacks to white readers for the first time in a way that altered their idea of the "subservient" black man.

The week will kick off with its traditional dedication at 8:15 a.m. Monday, March 31. This year's honoree is Jackie Granberry of Raymond, HCC's vice president for Institutional Advancement.
