– Without a Hinds Community College Development Foundation scholarship, Angela Cossey, 18, of Brandon says she wouldn’t be a college student today.

Cossey, a business major, had a good ACT college entrance exam score of 24, was third in her class and was active in student council. But she also needed her full tuition paid because her family wasn’t able to help her. She didn’t see a path to doing that just on her ACT alone.

Cossey last year received the Rankin County Rotary Club Scholarship through the Hinds Development Foundation.

Getting the scholarship “was crucial for me because I wouldn’t have gone to college if I hadn’t gotten a full ride. My parents didn’t have the money to help me. It would have been much more stressful to have to work harder to have to pay for everything,” she said.

The deadline for applying for 2008-09 is Tuesday, April 1.

Cossey got to senior year and realized that most scholarships are totally ACT based. That’s not true of most Development Foundation scholarships, although they do consider ACT scores as one factor.

“It was really good to see a scholarship not totally based on ACT,” Cossey said.

The deadline for applying for 2008-09 is Tuesday, April 1.

The Hinds Community College Development Foundation will award approximately 400 student scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,660 for the 2008-09 school year.

The application process is easy. Students can access a form for all Hinds scholarships on the college Web site at www.hindscc.edu under prospective students or current students. Just click on “Paying for college” and “Scholarships” on the left-hand side of the Web page.

For a Development Foundation scholarship, a student needs three letters of reference, a high school or college transcript, ACT scores, a list of achievements and a letter explaining why he or she should receive a Development Foundation Scholarship. Unlike an ACT scholarship, most Development Foundation scholarships do not require a minimum ACT score.

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of a student’s desire for achievement, involvement in extracurricular activities, financial need, grades, test scores and letters of recommendation.

Students may contact Heather Curtis, Hinds Community College in-house recruiter/scholarship coordinator, at 601.857.3792 for information related to applying for scholarships as well as financial aid available throughout the college.

Packets should be submitted by April 1 to the Student Recruiting Office, P.O. Box 1100, Raymond, Miss. 39154-1100.
