 – More than 100 educators from area public and private high schools were a part of the 29th annual Counselors and Principals Workshop in the new Wellness Complex on Hinds Community College’s Raymond campus. The workshop was on Nov. 29.

The counselors and principals also attended mini-sessions on self-defense, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, car repair, fitness while doing yard work and general fitness training. Jackson Campus-Nursing/Allied Health Center students were on hand to provide free health screens. Educators also learned about the many services Hinds offers to students at the six locations, including hundreds of general scholarship opportunities and targeted scholarships for ACT scores or programs such as band and athletics.

Many of the educators have attended the workshop over the years. Florence High counselor Jan Lemon has attended for 14 years.

“It’s always good to have information reinforced,” Lemon said.
Forest Hill High counselor Tommie Martin, new in her job, said she was amazed at the number of scholarship opportunities and the number of locations. “Had I known, I probably would have attended Hinds instead of going to a four-year college myself,” she said.

“I heard a lot of information about Hinds.”
Hinds President Clyde Muse, in his 29th year as president, said the college “still has the kind of quality that you would expect of this institution. What we pride ourselves in is quality teaching in quality instructional space at a price that you can’t beat. You can still come to Hinds for less than half of what it’ll cost to go to a public four-year college and just a fraction of what it’ll cost to go to a private college.

“You get all of that but at the same time you get excellent teaching, a good, safe environment in which to go to school, and you have an opportunity to make connections that will last a lifetime,” Muse told the local educators.
