HCC's Kaleidoscope features culture of Africa

10/23/07 - Kaleidoscope, a two-day celebration of cultural diversity, will be held on the Hinds Community College Raymond Campus Oct. 23 and 24. Featured will be free activities on the theme, "Windows into Africa," to which the public is invited. Except where noted, all events will be held in Cain-Cochran Hall's Hogg Auditorium.

8:15 a.m., Jay Eubanks lecture, "Animals of Africa"
9:30 a.m., Rev. Ross Olivier lecture, "South Africa: Healing the Wounds"
11 a.m. Dr. Lealan Swanson lecture, "Art in Africa"
1 p.m.  Dr. Bobby Cooper, 2007 Humanities Teacher Award recipient, lecture, "Africa: The Roots of American Music," Reeves Hall Room 165, with reception following in Marie Hull Gallery


Wednesday, Oct. 24
8 a.m. Jan Harper lecture: "My Life in Africa: Culture and Customs of East Africa"
9 a.m. Julie Hines Mabus lecture, "Sudan: Return and Reconstruction"
10 a.m.  Diane Williams, Melvin Wheeler, Latongya Garner, African folktales and music, "From Africa to America"
11 a.m.  Montage Theatre of Dance, performance, "The Story of My People"
12:30 p.m. Dr. Moy Godwin Bongyu, a panel discussion, "Knowing Africa," Beemon Hall, Room 158
