Hinds hosting high school Technology Expo
10/08/07 — Hinds Community College and the Rankin County Chamber of Commerce are teaming to sponsor Technology Expo 2007 8 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Oct. 25, at the George Wynne Multipurpose Room on the Rankin Campus.
The one-day event will feature more than 50 exhibits showcasing local companies and their uses of technology and Hinds Community College programs of study in technology. Among the companies represented are Entergy, Best Buy, Daily Equipment Co. and others. Hinds will showcase such programs as marketing management technology, pharmacy technology, registered nursing and electronics technology.
More than 1,200 high school juniors are expected from Pearl High and the eight Rankin County school district high schools - Brandon, Florence, McLaurin, Northwest Rankin, Pelahatchie, Pisgah, Puckett and Richland.
"The Expo is a joint effort between Hinds Community College and the Rankin County Chamber of Commerce to expose students to careers in the area that may require only one or two years of training or education byond high school," said David Campbell, career and technical dean of the Rankin Campus.
Statistics show that only 30 percent of the students will earn a bachelor's degree. Students need to see other educational options that will help them obtain marketable skills, Campbell said.
