Hinds men's soccer wins state, region; women take third

10/22/07 - The Hinds Community College men's soccer team won their fourth straight Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) state and Region XXIII championship here Sunday night, defeating Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, 2-1.

The win puts the Eagles at 15-3 overall heading into their district playoff this weekend at a site and date yet to be determined.

Hinds head coach Doug Williams of Raymond also picked up his fourth consecutive Coach of the Year honors by being named MACJC and Region XXIII Coach of the Year. The award is Williams' sixth overall, also winning it during the 2000 and 2001 seasons. His record after eight years at Hinds stands at an amazing 126-27-5, which translates into an almost .800 winning percentage.

The Eagles of Hinds were led in the championship game by Michael Cooper of Vicksburg and Brandt Sutton of Brandon, who accounted for the two Eagle goals. Both Hinds victories were low-scoring and hard-fought affairs where defense was at a premium.

"This whole weekend was very intense because all of the teams played so hard," said Williams. "To win a championship like this, you have to have a little luck on your side, and we were fortunate enough to have it."

Hinds was able to play its way into Sunday's championship by defeating Meridian Community College 2-1 on Saturday night. The game was won on penalty kicks, with Hinds prevailing in the end.

The women's soccer team finished in third place here at the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) state tournament.

The Lady Eagles were defeated 1-0 by Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on Saturday afternoon. The game was decided by a shootout after regulation had ended. Hinds took 31 shots on the goal during the course of the game, compared to the mere 12 taken by Gulf Coast.

"I feel like we outplayed them, but we just could not manage to finish our shots in the game or shootout," said Hinds coach Kori Crutchfield. "We had many opportunities but we weren't able to capitalize on them."

The loss on Saturday placed Hinds in the consolation game on Sunday, where they faced off against Itawamba Community College. The Lady Eagles avenged an earlier loss to Itawamba, shutting them out, 6-0. Kendal Lee of Clinton led the scoring for Hinds, totaling four goals and one assist on the day. Sarah Smith of Byram and Nadia Baltazar of Pearl rounded out the scoring for the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Eagles will head to Meridian Community College this weekend to play in the Region XXIII tournament. The bracket and times for these games is yet to be determined. Please click on www.hindscc.edu for more information on this weekend's action.
