John Manchester holds Bachelors degrees in both business administration and music theory and composition from Livingston University (Alabama). He took a Master of Music Education degree (Music Theory and Arranging emphasis) from North Texas State University, which included study with Robert Ottman, Martin Mailman, William Latham and John Giordano. He holds the Doctor of Arts degree in Music Theory from the University of Mississippi, where he studied with Andrew Fox. He joined the Hinds faculty in 1971, and was Director of Bands for fifteen years before assuming his current duties as Music Instructor. He teaches sophomore music theory, music appreciation and online music appreciation. Compositions and arrangements include works for children's choir, adult choir, solo piano, jazz band, marching band and various small instrumental ensembles. His arrangements for marching band have been performed by more than 2,000 high school bands throughout the United States. Dr. Manchester is the author of a collection of musical analyses of supplementary music for the music appreciation text, Music: The Art of Listening by Jean Ferris.
As a performer, he is a bassist with extensive experience in the symphonic, big band, combo jazz and pop idioms. His past and present professional affiliations include the American Federation of Musicians, South Central Music Theory Society, College Music Society, The New Bourbon Street Jazz Society and the Mississippi Public Community/Junior College Band Directors Association.
