Honors Progam
The Hinds Community College Honors Program provides an enhanced and supportive learning environment for outstanding students. Membership in the program is open to any high school graduate with a minimum composite ACT score of 25 or GPA of 3.5 as well as to any Hinds student with a 3.5 or higher college GPA. Each semester members must enroll in one Honors class, and the Honors Forum and must commit to ten hours of community service. Honors Program members who complete these requirements will receive scholarships varying from $150 to $250 per semester.

Honors Classes
Honors classes are usually smaller in size and are discussion-based. Instructors strive to challenge students with in-depth study of material. Approaches to learning may include working in collaborative groups, using primary sources, researching and presenting projects, and studying abroad. Honors instructors are selected from within the individual departments. For courses in which honors sections are not offered, students may earn Honors credit through contract arrangements. Honors classes are offered in the following subject areas:

• Art
• Chemistry
• History
• Music
• Biology
• E
nglish
• Mathematics
• Oral Communications

Honors Forum
The Honors Forum meets every Wednesday at noon. Speakers, events, and activities are selected for the purpose of engaging students in an interdisciplinary study topic developed by Phi Theta Kappa. The class carries one semester hour of institutional credit that transfers as an elective. To earn academic credit for the Forum, students must fully participate in Forum presentations.

Community Service
Students must complete 10 hours of community service per semester either on campus or with an approved service organization, and they must write a reflection paper about their service experiences. Service must be documented by the Center for Community Involvement located in the McLendon Library Media Center.
