Physical Therapist Assistant The Physical Therapist Assistant curriculum is a two-year program of study that prepares a PTA to perform interventions under the supervision of a physical therapist in an ethical, legal, safe and effective manner. PTAs enhance the delivery of physical therapy services by providing delegated interventions, assisting the PT with data collection, communicating with other members of the health care delivery team, interacting with members of the patient's family and caregivers, and working cooperatively with other health care providers. It is accredited by the commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
Employment Opportunities Students successfully completing the program receive an Associate in Applied Science Degree. Graduates are eligible to take the state licensure examination. Physical Therapist Assistants have the opportunity for employment in a wide range of areas. PTAs are involved in the care of patients from birth to geriatrics. They are able to work in specialized areas that include pediatrics, orthopedics, neurology, sports medicine, ergonomics, cardiac rehabilitation, wound care, burn management, amputation rehabilitation and pain management. They may also be in a setting that treats a variety of any or all of these types of patients.
