Emergency Medical Technology Emergency Medical Technicians provide assessment, care and transport to patients in emergency and non-emergency situations. These pre-hospital providers function under medical control physicians and serve our communities in various capacities. Many volunteer with local fire departments. Most work for local ambulance services. Hospitals and Industry also hire EMTS.
Hinds CC offers the EMT-Basic course, the entry-level and foundational course in the EMT program, each Fall and Spring semester. Many EMS personnel, firefighters, law enforcement officers, civil defense employees, and other public service personnel take the EMT-Basic course for professional development. Hinds CC offers two options for paramedic training, a full-time day option and an alternate part-time evening option. Students make separate applications to the paramedic component. Students should apply early to ensure availability but may register through the late registration period for the semester. EMT-Basic and Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II are prerequisites for the paramedic component. Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II must be taken within the last five years, with a score C or better in both Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II. Students are eligible to take the National Registry Examination for EMT-Paramedics after completion of the certificate program. Students are encouraged to complete the Associate of Applied Science degree as well, as prescribed in the Hinds Community College catalog.
