English & Modern Foreign Languages
Effective communication is the beginning and the end of true education. By listening, evaluating, speaking, reading, and writing, we build connections between ourselves and our world. The English instructors at Hinds know that students of varying abilities and experiences enter our classes every semester.

How do you feel about English?
• I only remember writing one essay my senior year and that was my term paper.
• In high school we worked on literature most of the time. We only wrote one paper.
• I don't feel comfortable with English at all. I don't feel like it is my strongest subject.

or

• Writing has always come easy to me.
• In high school we wrote essays on a weekly basis and a research paper every year.
• I really enjoyed literature in high school.

A 1999 Work-Based Learning Consortium of Mississippi industries rated the abilities to read, write and communicate well among the most important skills that employers seek in their employees. Also, the ability to write well and communicate ideas is essential to success in higher education. Therefore, our department is committed to preparing our students to meet the challenges of business, industry and academia.
