Online Orientation
Hinds Community College does not require a face-to-face orientation for online courses. Students are encouraged to take the READI assessment to determine readiness for online learning. Success in an online course requires a clear knowledge of the technology used in the online experience.

Am I a good candidate for Distance Learning?
Online courses are not like regular classroom classes. They are designed for students who cannot take a regular class because of their schedules, family responsibilities or disabilities. Since online courses can be more demanding than regular classes, answer the following questions to help you decide if you should take them.

• Am I self-motivated and self-directed to learn without attending a regular class?
• Do I know how to schedule my study time and work on my own without help?
• Do I write well enough to communicate what I have learned?
• Do I have my own computer with Internet service?
• Do I have a color computer monitor?
• Can I can create, save and manage files on my computer?
• Do I know how to install software on my computer?
• I know how to "download" information on my computer.
• Do I know how to send and receive e-mail messages?
• Do I know how to attach a file to an e-mail message?
• Do I know how to "paste" text from a word processor into an e-mail message?
• Do I know how to receive a file attachment from incoming e-mail?

READI is a new assessment to determine a student's readiness for online course work. The first time you enter READI use eaglestudent as the username and online as the password. After that you will use your email address and a special code that has been emailed to you as your login. This assessment takes about 30 minutes to complete. You can stop in the middle and resume it later. Once you have completed READI print the results and take them with you to register for classes. From this assessment you may learn valuable information about yourself and how you will perform in an online class.
