The Hindsonian student newspaper covers the Jackson Campus-Academic/Technical Center, Jackson Campus-Nursing/Allied Health Center, Rankin, Raymond and Vicksburg-Warren campuses. Students on the Utica Campus produce a separate newspaper under adviser Willie Ealey. The Hindsonian is a broad sheet format - typically four pages, six pages or eight pages – and features color photographs on the front and back. The Hindsonian typically publishes four to eight times a year, depending on student participation.
Hinds Community College students on the Raymond Campus can receive a one-hour course credit for working on The Hindsonian or The Eagle yearbook. The College Publications course is JOU 1111 College Publications I for students in the course for the first time. Up to four semesters of credit are offered. Interested students are strongly encouraged but not required to also enroll in JOU 1313 News Writing and Reporting I offered only in the fall or COM 2483 Introduction to Mass Communications offered only in the spring. Students on other Hinds campuses who want to contribute to The Hindsonian may do so for bylined credit but not course credit. However, those students who demonstrate strong interest may be eligible to earn online credit in subsequent semesters.
The Hindsonian adviser is Public Relations Director Cathy Hayden, who has more than 30 years’ experience in the newspaper industry that includes 25 years at The Clarion-Ledger. She can be reached at 601.857.3322, or by email at email@example.com. The Public Relations office is in Suite 210 of the Student Union Building.
Working closely with Cathy Hayden is Stacey Duke, who teaches journalism courses on the Raymond Campus and worked at The Hattiesburg American.
The Hindsonian staff needs primarily writers and photographers. Photographers’ work typically goes in both the newspaper and the yearbook, but students should plan to attend only one of the meetings. Staff members meet for 30 to 60 minutes each week to discuss the current issue in production, brainstorm story ideas and discuss assignments. Staff members cover events and news of specific interest to Hinds Community College students. Staff members interview sources and write stories or photograph events and write cutlines.
All student work used in The Hindsonian is credited. Occasionally, student cartoons are accepted for the editorial page after consideration and approval of staff members. Student leaders from such groups as Phi Theta Kappa or Associated Student Government on all campuses covered by The Hindsonian are asked to write news columns concerning their organization’s activities
