The Hinds Community College campus has been abuzz the past week with Homecoming activities, and Thursday night's football game at Joe Renfroe Stadium was no exception. The Eagles of Hinds put forth a furious come-from-behind-attempt, but came up short in the end, dropping to Jones County Junior College, 31-24.
The loss dropped Hinds to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the South division, while the Bobcats of Jones stayed perfect at 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the South.
Daniel Borne, who finished with three touchdowns on the evening, put Jones on the board early, racing in from 12 yards out for the score. Jacob Chancellor added the point after attempt to give Jones a 7-0 advantage with 8:16 left in the first quarter.
An interception by Akeem Davis of a Wesley Mounger pass attempt would put the Bobcats in fine position late in the first half. Jones would take advantage, when Chancellor drilled a 27-yard field goal to extend the Jones lead to 10-0 with 1:58 left in the half.
Hinds would eventually get on the board before halftime, when All-State kicker Parker Ware of Brandon put a 35-yard field goal through the uprights as time expired to make the score 10-3, Jones, going into the break.
Borne would waste no time in trying to put the Eagles away for good, as his second touchdown of the night came on a one-yard run with 10:03 left in the third quarter. A Chancellor PAT made it 17-3.
The game would seemingly be put out of hand on the next Jones possession, as Borne added his final TD with another one-yard run. Chancellor had his point after blocked to give Jones a 23-3 lead with 14:54 left in the fourth quarter.
The comeback attempt would begin for Hinds on the next possession, as the Eagles would show a tremendous amount of grit and determination to fight back.
After a clutch third down conversion, Mounger hooked up in the endzone with Treyvias Alexander of Breaux Bridge, La., for a 40-yard touchdown reception. The Ware PAT cut the Jones lead to 23-10 with 13:39 left in the fourth.
Jones would help the Eagles out on their first play after the touchdown, fumbling the ball on the Hinds 45-yard line. The Eagles would cut into the lead immediately, as Mounger found Cole Michael of Jackson for a 13-yard touchdown pass. The Ware point after cut it to 23-17, Jones, with 11:21 left in the fourth quarter.
On the ensuing possession, Ware gave the Hinds fans hope when his 34-yard punt buried the Bobcats on their own one-yard line. However, QB Early James of Jones would stick the dagger in the Eagles heart, hitting Anthony Jackson on a 99-yard fly route for the touchdown. James would then convert the two-point conversion for the 31-17 lead with just 6:21 left in the game.
Hinds would not go down without a major fight, however, as Mounger would scamper on an exciting 15-yard TD run to keep the Eagles in it. Ware knocked the point after through to cut it to 31-24 with 4:33 left.
After both teams traded out possession with no success, the Eagles had one more shot with the ball on their own 11-yard line with 1:11 left. The drive would produce some exciting plays, but the end result was without a score, ending the game at 31-24 and another Jones victory.
Mounger had a productive night throwing the ball for Hinds, finishing 27-for-47 with 334 yards and two touchdowns, to go along with two interceptions. Alexander finished with six catches for 105 yards and one touchdown reception.
Borne had three touchdowns for Jones to lead the Bobcats scoring charge.
Hinds will have next Thursday night off, before traveling to Summit on Saturday, Oct. 4 to take on Southwest Community College in a 3 p.m. matchup.
