Hinds football pulls away late, tops East Central, 35-21
09/12/2008

Hinds Community College moved to 2-1 on the 2008 campaign on Thursday night, defeating the East Central Community College Warriors in Decatur by the count of 35-21. East Central dropped to 0-3 on the year.

Hinds wasted no time in getting on the board, marching right down the field and scoring on a nine-yard run by Steven Knight of Pearl. Parker Ware of Brandon, who had a very busy night, added the point after for a quick 7-0 lead with 8:48 left in the first quarter.

East Central, who totaled six first downs on the next drive, would score on the ensuing drive to tie things up at seven. Emmanuel Taylor hit Courtney Shelton on a five-yard pass for the score, and Derek Crenshaw made the point after.

Quarterback Wesley Mounger of Clinton would make the score 14-7 when he hooked up with Treyvias Alexander of Breaux Bridge, La., for a 38-yard touchdown strike. Ware's PAT gave Hinds a 14-7 advantage early in the second quarter.

After trading three and outs, Hinds would strike again, as Aaron Woolfolk of Maringouin, La., scampered 88 yards for a touchdown on only his second carry of the season. Ware was on the mark again, and Hinds now led 21-7 going into the locker room.

Hinds came out of halftime seemingly with all of the momentum. However, an East Central interception and one-yard touchdown run by Derrick Cade, topped off by a Crenshaw PAT, cut the Hinds lead to only a touchdown at 21-14 w/3:42 to go in the third quarter.

Taylor would tie things up just into the fourth quarter when he trekked 16 yards to the house. The Crenshaw point after attempt was good, and things were knotted up at 21.

Mounger would put the Eagles ahead for good on the next possession, however, as the freshman bounced off tackles and found paydirt with a 15-yard run on a crucial third and nine deep in Warrior territory. Ware put Hinds ahead 28-21 with his fourth point after.

Mounger would strike once more before the night was over, this time with a 25-yard run with 4:44 left in the fourth quarter. Ware's fifth PAT made the scoring final at 35-21.

Woolfolk, in his first significant action at running back, led the way for Hinds with nine rushes for 145 yards and one touchdown. Mounger, who struggled in week two after a great opener, found his groove again, rushing for 140 yards on 14 carries.

Taylor had a big night on the ground for East Central, rushing 22 times for 138 yards and one touchdown.
