Five Hinds Community College baseball players will be furthering their collegiate baseball careers at the four-year level next season.
Nick Carson of Vicksburg, an outfielder/pitcher, has signed with Alcorn State University. The dual position threat hit .268 with three home runs and 15 RBI and was 1-0 with one save in ten innings on the mound.
Jonathon Ettinger of Vicksburg, an infielder, is headed to Louisiana College in Pineville, La. The scrappy second baseman had a monster year, hitting .388 with a team-leading 57 hits and drove in 27 runs behind the strength of 14 doubles.
Chris Ferriss of Clinton, a pitcher, is going to Delta State University in Cleveland. The lanky righty was the top arm out of the Eagles bullpen, making 25 appearances and finishing with a 5-3 record, two saves and a 2.70 ERA in 46 innings pitched.
Kenny Rowan of Jackson, an outfielder/infielder, has also signed with Alcorn State. The former Callaway High School standout saw limited action due to injury, but finished with a .400 batting average in 10 at bats.
Alex Ward of Mount Olive, a catcher, will continue his career at the University of Texas-Tyler in Tyler, Texas. The physical presence behind the plate hit .281 with four doubles and 12 RBI and provided sold defense for the Eagles.
The list of signees on the 2008 Hinds baseball team now equals nine, as Eric Douglas, Josh Gordon, Brandon Martin and David Mooney all inked with four-year schools in the fall early signing period.
"These guys' signing with four-year schools brings me great excitement," said Hinds coach Sam Temple.
"All of these young men are very special to me, and I think it is really neat that nine players out of our first recruiting class have moved on to the next level."
