The Hinds Community College Lady Eagles softball team had one of its best seasons in the program's history in 2008, finishing with a 34-20 overall record and 13-3 mark in Central division play. The mark in division play was good enough for first place, helping the Lady Eagles earn the first Central division title in head coach Andy Lee's three seasons.
The Lady Eagles finished runner-up in the Region 23 tournament to Co-Lin Community College, losing 3-1 in the regional championship game. The win would have propelled Hinds into the Division II World Series.
Hinds, which hit .340 as a team during the 2008 campaign, had numerous offensive weapons at their disposal. Lauren Johnson of Vicksburg, an infielder, led the Lady Eagles in RBIs (50) and home runs (three). The sophomore also was second on the team with a .414 average.
Candace Pocorello and Mary Alice Roy, both sophomore infielders of Pride, La. were major run producers for Hinds. Pocorello was a .414 hitter who was 20 for 22 in stolen bases with 49 runs scored. Roy tied with Pocorello for the team lead in runs scored with 49 and stole 26 of 27 base attempts behind a .400 batting average.
Kala Griffith of Brandon, a sophomore outfielder, turned in another spectacular season. The pre-season All-American hit. 368 on the season, with 41 stolen bases in 44 attempts, a team leading 13 doubles and four triples, and had 48 RBIs and 48 runs scored.
Hinds was able very efficient in the pitching circle, with Brandi Westerfield of Richland and Taylor James of Madison shouldering the load. Westerfield, a freshman infielder who also hit .321, had a 17-10 record with a 2.38 ERA in 179 innings pitched.
James, who recorded four wins as a freshman in 2007, had a 13-7 record with a 3.21 ERA in 122 innings pitched.
"We had a tremendous second half of the season," said Lee. "Our kids struggled in the early going, but we really found our groove in the latter half of the year and were able to win a lot of ballgames."
