Lady Eagles softball on five-game winning streak

3/27/08 The Hinds softball team has been on fire as of late, winning five games in a row to improve to 17-15 overall and 5-1 in Central division play.

The Lady Eagles defeated East Mississippi Community College in a divisional doubleheader in Raymond on Wednesday. Hinds won game one 7-5 and followed it up with a 4-2 win in game two.

Hinds was able to sweep Holmes Community College as well on March 21 by the scores of 7-4 and 4-2. After losing their district opener to East Central Community College, the Lady Eagles have won five district games in a row.

The Lady Eagles have been bolstered by the return of Lauren Johnson of Vicksburg. Johnson, who made All-State honors after an exceptional freshman season in 2007, is currently batting .397 with two home runs, three doubles and 24 RBIs in only 58 at bats.

Mary Alice Roy of Pride, La. is second on the team in batting average, hitting at a .391 clip. Kala Griffith of Brandon, a pre-season All-American, had driven in 29 runs to lead the team behind a .354 batting average.

The Lady Eagles are led in the circle by Brandi Westerfield of Richland. The freshman righty, who also sports a .346 batting average, is 8-8 with a 1.92 ERA in 102 inning pitched. Taylor James of Madison, a sophomore righty, has also done very well, as evidenced by her 8-5 record and 2.78 ERA in 68 innings pitched.

Hinds will be back in action on Monday, March 31 when they take on Meridian Community College. The Central division doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m. at Rene Warren Field in Raymond.
