Hinds softball finding its way
3/19/08
After a typically slow start, the Hinds softball team is back to its winning ways. The Lady Eagles now sit at 13-14 on the season, with a 1-1 record in Central division play. Hinds improved its record by sweeping Southwest Community College (W, 2-1 and 9-4) and St. Ambrose (Pa.) College (W, 9-5 and 13-5) on March 6 and 7. Hinds then saw its winning streak come to an end with a 4-3 loss to Louisiana State-Alexandria (LSU-A). The St. Ambrose and LSU-A games were part of the Elite Eight Tournament in Ridgeland hosted by Belhaven College.
Since that time, Hinds has split doubleheaders with Southwest (L, 5-4 and W, 8-0), Itawamba Community College (L, 3-2 and W, 9-0), Co-Lin Community College (L, 6-0 and W, 10-0) and East Central Community College (L, 7-6 and W, 5-4). The East Central doubleheader was the Central division opener for the Lady Eagles.
Hinds has been led in the circle by Brandi Westerfield of Richland, a freshman pitcher/outfielder, and Taylor James of Madison, a sophomore pitcher/infielder. Westerfield is 6-7 with a 1.66 ERA in 76 innings pitched, while James is 6-5 with a 2.77 ERA in 53 innings pitched.
Westerfield has also carried a hot bat for the Lady Eagles, and is currently hitting .377 on the season with 15 RBIs. All-American outfielder Kala Griffith of Brandon, a sophomore outfielder, is tied with Westerfield for the team lead in batting average, also hitting at a .377 clip. Griffith has 27 RBIs to go along with six doubles and three triples, and is 20 for 22 in the stolen base department.
Mary Alice Roy of Pride, La., a sophomore infielder, is also sizzling for the Lady Eagles, hitting .371 with 13 RBIs. Roy is perfect on the basepaths, as she has stolen 15 of 15 bases.
