Lady Eagles softball playing better
3/3/08
The Hinds softball team has seen its share of early season struggles, but look to be back on the right track. The Lady Eagles fell into a rut last week, losing five consecutive games at one stretch. They have rebounded, however, and split their last two series with Jones County Junior College and Bossier Parish Community College.
Hinds (5-9) is led at the plate by Katie Williamson of Pearl. The freshman outfielder is hitting at a .394 clip with eight RBIs and three stolen bases. She is followed by sophomore Kala Griffith of Brandon, an outfielder. The Division II preseason All-American is currently batting .359 on the season, to go along with 11 RBIs and seven stolen bases.
The Lady Eagles are looking for solid production in the circle, as Lauren Johnson of Vicksburg, the team’s top pitcher a year ago, has been out with a back injury and looks to be lost for an extended amount of time. Hinds coach Andy Lee hopes to find a reliable replacement or two before heading into conference play on March 18.
“We have been off to a traditionally slow start,” said Lee. “We have played a tough schedule so far, but hopefully it will pay off when we start our conference games.”
Hinds will return to action on Tuesday when they face Pearl River Community College at Rene Warren Field. The action begins at 1 p.m.
