Hinds, Belhaven tie in exhibition fundraiser
02/27/08 The Hinds Community College and Belhaven College men’s soccer teams played to a 0-0 standstill Friday night at Newell Field in Jackson. The game was held as a fundraiser for the Fullerton Scholarship Fund, which helps local soccer players pay for the fees involved in participating in the Mississippi club soccer.
The game got off to a fast start as both teams pressured each other in the opening minutes. Donald Garrett of Florence, the goalkeeper at Hinds, was very efficient in goal, making many saves on the evening.
Hinds produced numerous chances with Michael Cooper of Vicksburg and Scott Pulliam of Pearl coming close on different occasions, but not being able to find the back of the net.
“I am proud of the way the team played tonight,” said Hinds coach Doug Williams. “Everyone on the team got a significant amount of playing time and did a good job.
“We were missing a few starters due to injury and some of the guys really stepped up and served the team well. We always look forward to playing against local four-year schools and the guys proved that we can compete with one of the best teams in our region.”
