The Hinds baseball team is in the final week of the 2008 regular season with its sights set on a run at postseason play.
The Eagles are currently 27-16 overall and 7-5 in Central division action.
In recent action, Hinds has swept East Central Community College in Raymond and split a doubleheader with Holmes Community College on the road.
The Eagles received a standup pitching performance from David Mooney in game one on Sat, Apr. 19 versus Holmes. The sophomore lefty, a Jackson native and University of Evansville signee, threw a one-hit shutout to defeat Holmes 2-0.
Game two saw Hinds trail 6-0 after the first inning, but the always resilient Eagles fought back to cut the lead to three with the bases loaded and one out.
However, Holmes was able to turn a spectacular double play on a hard hit ball by Brandon Benton, thus killing the Eagles momentum.
The final score of game two was 7-4. Hinds was led by Mark Buchanan’s two hits, including an opposite field home run in the fourth inning.
Hinds overcame sloppy defensive play on Tues, Apr. 15 to earn the sweep over East Central. Clutch relief performances by the Hinds bullpen and timely hitting led to the 6-5 victory in game one and an 8-4 win in game two.
The Eagles will play the final home doubleheader of 2008 on Wednesday, when they take on the Lions of East Mississippi Community College.
The first pitch will be thrown at 3 p.m.
