Hinds baseball is even in conference play
4/3/08 The Hinds baseball team has opened Central division play by splitting doubleheaders with East Central Community College and Holmes Community College. The Eagles now sit at 18-13 overall and 2-2 in division play.
Hinds was able to pummel Holmes in game one on Wednesday in Raymond, beating the visiting Bulldogs by a score of 11-1. Hinds got an outstanding pitching performance from Brandon Martin of Brandon. The powerful right-handed sophomore struck out six and walked just one to move to 2-2 on the year. Nick Carson and Eric Douglas, both of Vicksburg, led the Eagles with three hits apiece. Carson saw one of his hits go over the fence for his third home run of the 2008 campaign.
Game two with Holmes was a different story for the Eagles, as the Hinds bats were held silent for the most part, resulting in a 4-2 loss. Daniel Cowart of Brandon was spectacular in relief for Hinds, throwing five innings of relief and finishing with eight strikeouts.
The first game with East Central on Saturday proved to be a heartbreaking loss for Hinds, as East Central put together a three-run rally in the final inning to defeat the Eagles 13-12. The Hinds hitters accounted for 14 hits in the first game, but it wasn’t enough. Eric Douglas and Jonathon Ettinger, both of Vicksburg, put together three hit days to lead the attack. Douglas hit his third home run as well in game one.
The second game with East Central ended on a more positive note, as Hinds was able to salvage the series with a 9-3 victory. Douglas and Josh Gordon of Vicksburg, who also homered in game one, finished with home runs to pace Hinds. Aryo Fleming of Baton Rouge threw five strong innings to move to 7-1.
Hinds will travel to Scooba on Saturday to face East Mississippi Community College in a Central division double dip. First pitch will be at 2 p.m.
