Baseball wins three of four

3/26/08 The Hinds baseball team has won three out of its last four games, including a doubleheader sweep of Pearl River Community College on Tuesday in Poplarville. The Eagles now stand at 14-11 on the season, with Central division play opening on Saturday at East Central Community College.

Hinds was able to grab game one against Pearl River 6-4 behind a strong pitching performance from sophomore Brandon Martin of Brandon. The hard-throwing righty pitched five strong innings to improve to 1-1 on the season. Cory Underwood of West Monroe, La. was the big hitter for the Eagles, finishing with two hits, including a run-scoring double.

Game two was a low offensive output for Hinds, but a number of Eagle relievers shut down the Wildcats offense en route to a 4-1 victory. Derek Casola of West Monroe, La. picked up the win on the mound for Hinds, throwing two scoreless innings of middle relief to move to 2-0.

On Thursday, March 20, Hinds split a pair of games with Rochester (Minn.) College and Louisiana State University-Eunice. Hinds knocked off Rochester 6-1 in game one, but fell 9-4 to LSU-Eunice in the nightcap.

Jonathon Ettinger of Vicksburg was the big stick offensively for Hinds all day, finishing with six hits and two RBIs out of the leadoff spot. Aryo Fleming of Baton Rouge was the winner on the bump in the first game to improve to 6-1 on the young season. Brandon Martin, 0-1 at the time, was the losing pitcher for the Eagles in game two.

Hinds will take on Millsaps College on Thursday in Raymond. The doubleheader will start at 4 p.m. and both games will be five innings long.
