Hinds baseball splits last two doubleheaders

3/19/08 The Hinds baseball team has found itself unable to sweep a two-game series from in-state opponents as of late. Hinds traveled to Ellisville to take on Jones County Junior College on Tuesday night and ended with a split. The Bobcats defeated Hinds 4-3 in extra innings in game one, but game two proved to be much better for the Eagles, as they won 9-3. Hinds now stands at 11-10 on the season.

The Eagles traveled to Fulton to take on Itawamba on March 15, and won the first game 9-5 in extra innings. The Indians won game two, however, by the count of 6-1.

The first game against Jones County was a tough pill to swallow for Hinds, as they were defeated in extra innings. David Mooney of Jackson, a sophomore outfielder/pitcher threw seven solid innings on the mound for Hinds, but was unable to receive enough offensive support, and was credited with the hard-luck loss. Jonathon Ettinger of Vicksburg, a sophomore infielder, led the offensive attack with two hits.

The second game saw a much different approach from the Hinds offense, as they finished with nine runs. Eric Douglas of Vicksburg, a sophomore outfielder, led Hinds with three hits, including a run-scoring triple. Derek Casola of West Monroe, La., a freshman pitcher, picked up his first collegiate victory with five strong innings.

In game one versus Itawamba, sophomore David Mooney of Jackson became the first player to hit for the cycle in the Sam Temple era. Mooney finished the day 4-for-5, complete with a single, double, triple and home run. Chris Ferriss of Clinton, a sophomore pitcher, was strong in relief and picked up his first victory of 2008.

Game two was a struggle offensively for Hinds against Itawamba. Josh Gordon of Vicksburg, a sophomore infielder, paced the Eagles with a solo home run to dead center field in the sixth inning.
