Hinds baseball splits with Co-Lin

2/21/08 The Hinds baseball team lost their first game 4-3 yesterday against Co-Lin Community College, but rebounded in the second game to win 7-2 and salvage a split with the Wolves. The Eagles now stand at 2-3 on the season.

The first game looked to be an offensive show early with Co-Lin scoring two in the first inning and Hinds following up with one of their own. Starters Brandt Hinton of Co-Lin and Brandon Martin of Hinds, a Brandon native, settled in, however, and turned game one into a pitching duel. Both pitchers were spectacular, and the score remained 2-1 until Co-Lin added an insurance run in the sixth inning to go up 3-1.

Hinds would tie the game up in the bottom half as Josh Gordon of Vicksburg provided a clutch two-out, two RBI hit to tie the game at three. The game would go into extra innings, with the Wolves scoring the go-ahead run to make it 4-3 and give them the victory.

Chris Ferriss of Clinton, who was outstanding in relief, was the hard-luck loser. He dropped to 0-1 on the year. Eric Douglas of Vicksburg provided the offensive spark for Hinds, collecting two hits in the game.

The Eagles would take advantage of five Co-Lin errors in the second game, and Aryo Fleming was masterful once again, improving his record to 2-0. The righty out of Baton Rouge, La., struck out seven in five innings and held the Wolves at bay.

Brandon Alford of Terry got things going early, coming through with a two-out, two RBI single to give Hinds a 2-0 lead. The freshman would finish with two hits to pace Hinds’ offense.

Hinds will face Southeast Iowa Community College on Saturday. Game time is at 2 p.m.
