Commencement Speaker Michael Hataway
Michael Hataway currently is graphic design coordinator and instructor in the art department of Mississippi College in Clinton. He is a Hinds Community College Professor Emeritus, having developed and chaired the Raymond Campus graphic communications department for 33 years before retiring from Hinds in 2004.
Hataway is a 1966 Hinds alumnus. He holds his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Mississippi College where in 1984 he was named Art Alumnus of the Year.
As a Hinds instructor, Hataway served on many college and professional committees and received numerous awards. His commercial design and advertising program was named the Post-Secondary Program of the Year by the Mississippi Association of Vocational Educators in 1982. Among other notable recognitions he has received are the Distinguished Faculty Member of the Year (1980-Hinds Alumni Association), Outstanding Vocational-Technical Instructor of the Year (1982-Hinds chapter, Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) and National Teacher of the Year Award (1983-American Vocational Association). He was recognized further at Hinds with the Outstanding Vocational-Technical Instructor of the Year Award (1989 and 1994), the Distinguished Career -Technical Instructor of the Year Award (1995), the Life Star Award (2003) and the 3-E Award (2004-Emphasis on Excellence and Enrichment), the college's highest employee recognition. In 2005, the year following his retirement from Hinds, he became a member of the first group of HCC retirees to receive the emeritus designation.
For many years Hataway served Hinds and the local community with his art talents. He has shown his watercolors in many venues and has served as an adjudicator for juried exhibitions.
Hataway and his wife Susan, also an artist, reside in Raymond and have four sons, Rob, Reagan, Cameron and Tabb.
